On Denim Day you can make a social statement with your fashion statement. Because this day is about commemorating resilience, solidarity and empowerment. Denim Day has its origins in a powerful global movement; a movement that emerged as a response to a horrific act of sexual violence. In 1992, in Rome, an 18-year-old girl was raped by a 45-year-old driving instructor during her first driving lesson. She reported the rape, and the perpetrator was arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to prison. However, in 1999, the perpetrator appealed the conviction, claiming that the sexual encounter was consensual. The victim was wearing very tight jeans at the time of the assault, which, according to the Italian Supreme Court, implied that she must have assisted her attacker in removing them and therefore consented to sex. The conviction was overturned, and the perpetrator was released. Say what?! Absolutely bizarre! Infuriated by this ludicrous verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. As a result of this protest, the verdict also got international coverage, sparking global outrage as well as a protest movement against the culture of victim blaming. That’s how Denim Day was born. Since then, Denim Day has become an annual, global event that raises awareness about sexual violence, that stands in solidarity with sexual violence survivors and that promotes gender equality.
